MSConfig (System Configuration Utility)

     MSconfig is a program that you can use to modify the startup conditions of Windows. With this program you can remove any unwanted programs from starting up with Windows or do things like modify the startup conditions of Windows. This tool is generally used by repair technicians to troubleshoot various computer problems. If there is generally one program that you want to learn to use Windows with then this is th program. This article will discuss how to access MSconfig and give a brief description of its features.


Accessing MSConfig

Accessing MSConfig in Windows XP

1: Boot up your computer into Windows XP.
2: Click on the Start button.
3: Click on Run.
4: Type in msconfig then click the OK button.

Accessing MSConfig in Windows Vista and 7

1: Boot up your computer into Windows.
2: Click on the Start button.
3: In the Search box type in msconfig.
4: Double-click on the msconfig result that shows up in search window.

Accessing MSConfig in Windows 8

Method 1

1: Boot up your computer into Windows 8.
2: From the dekstop type in msconfig.
3: Click on MSConfig from the search Window.

Method 2

1: Boot up your computer into Windows 8.
2: Press the Windows key and the R key on the keyboard at the same time.
3: In the Run box type in msconfig then click OK.

     Once you have launched MSConfig you should see the program looking like one of the following below.

Msconfig in Windows XP
Msconfig in Windows Vista
Msconfig in Windows 7
Msconfig in Windows 8

MSConfig Tab Informtion

General - This tab shows what startup mode MSConfig is using. You generally will be in a normal or selective startup mode.

System.ini - This tab shows and allows you to modify the contents of the system.ini file.

Win.ini - This tab shows and allows you to modify the contents of the Win.ini file.

Boot.ini - This tab shows and allows you to modify the information in the boot.ini file.

Boot - This sections shows and allows you modify Windows boot settings.

Services - This tab shows and allows you to enable\disable services that run when Windows starts.

Startup - This tab shows you and lets you enable\disable programs that startup when Windows starts up.

Tools - This tab gives you quick access to launch various troubleshooting tools within Windows.


MSConfig Terms

Clean Boot - This term is used by repair technicians when they are turning off all the startup items in the startup tab and turning off the non microsoft services in the service tab. This is used to help troubleshoot various computer problems. This term is generally used throughout many troubleshooting guides.

TSR - This is acronym that means Terminate and Stay Resident. This refers to programs that once run they will keep on running in the background until they are disabled.
