Super Metroid is a fantastic action adventure game. If you are looking for a game to add to your SNES collection then this is your game.

Gameplay

The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace..or so we thought. Super Metroid starts off where Metroid 2 left off. Samus has taken the last baby metroid to a space station to be studied but suddenly the space pirates break in and take the baby metroid. Samus Aran is now on a mission to get the baby metroid back and stop the space pirates from doing what ever evil things they have planned with the baby metroid.

Super Metroid uses the same gameplay setup as the previous Metroid games. You will explore the planet Zebes, fight various creatures, collect upgrades, and have an awesome time doing so. Super Metroid includes some much needed improvements over the previous games. The main improvement is the inclusion of a map system. This makes it so you spend a lot less time wandering around and more time going through the game. Sadly the map really doesn’t give you any information on where you need to specifically go though. So there is still a bit of wandering around. They have also improved the way that the weapons work. You can now mix your various beam upgrades into one killer beam. I really liked this and it felt awesome to shoot this killer beam of death.

Boss battles are also juiced up from previous metroid games. The first major boss battle has you fighting Kraid who is 2 screens big. Later boss battles like the Draygon battle have other methods in which you can defeat the boss. I came away enjoying each boss battle in Super Metroid.

Though my most favorite aspect of Super Metroid was the fact that the game is a giant easter egg hunt. Just about every room has some sort of hidden item or upgrade that you can collect. I loved how every upgrade or item I collected made Samus feel stronger and stronger.

Control

When I first started playing Super Metroid it took me a while to get used to the control setup. You use the X to shoot and A to jump instead of using the Y and B buttons. You use the B button to run which can be a bit awkward when trying to run, jump, and shoot at the same time. I did like though how you could use the L and R buttons to shoot at angles though. Once I did get used to the control I was able to do all the moves.

Graphics

Super Metroid has nothing sort of awesome graphics. I loved how moody the game started out. Every area in the game also has its own look which is fantastic. I liked how Samus suir changed as she got more suit upgrades. I just really enjoyed the graphics in Super Metroid.

Sound

The music in this game is nothing short of fantastic. I loved the intro theme music. I also loved how each area had its own audio with it as well. I also enjoyed the various sound effects that your various beam upgrades had as well.
